If you’ve been here before, you’ll know I love making yearly lists of things I want to do before the 31st of December hits again – so welcome to the 2017 bucket list! This year, it’s a few weeks late, and a little different.
For starters, I wasn’t going to make one. Initially it was because I’ve never even come close to completing my yearly lists, so I thought maybe they were kind of pointless/I wasn’t taking them seriously enough. And then three days into 2017, Brandon and I broke up after seven years together – so I found myself not knowing what I wanted from the next two weeks, let alone the next 12 months.
But then I realized that for the first time in my life, I have nothing tying me in one place. No obligations other than work. I can do whatever I want, with no need to make sure I’m spending enough of my time with anyone in particular – i.e. this is my best shot at completing the bloody list. So even though brainstorming activities and challenges to do for a year wasn’t coming naturally, I knew I wanted to do it, and that having a list of things to look forward would help cheer me up.
Which is where it gets different.
Because I was too busy spending the first weeks of the year moving out and finding somewhere new to live, I outsourced the list creation. While my 2015 and 2016 lists were my own compilations of stuff I already wanted to do and that realistically weren’t that far outside my comfort zone, my 2017 bucket list has been curated by other people – my family, my friends, my workmates and a few lovely bloggers like Skylar (Styled By Skylar), and Phoebe (Little Grey Box)* have taken things I didn’t complete from previous years, and mixed them up with things that are making me nervous (and some I’d been actively avoiding). This new list contains things I never would have thought of on my own, and has gotten everyone else excited about it too – several people have agreed/volunteered to do their suggestion with me. I’m loving it.
*I’m still waiting on a few. You know who you are!
